KEY POINTS:
LONDON - Bright children from poor British families are overtaken academically by less able youngsters from rich homes by the age of 7.
A report shows the academic progress of children is still overwhelmingly linked to their parents' income, giving them little opportunity to close the wealth gap, said the Sutton Trust charity which commissioned the study.
It found that 44 per cent of those from the richest 20 per cent of households attained a university degree compared to 10 per cent from the poorest 20 per cent.
