A fisherman in California has discovered the body of experienced Australian kayaker Leon Wescombe who went missing last month while attempting to negotiate what US authorities described as "treacherous" rapids.
Wescombe, 29, from Hobart, Tasmania, disappeared on the middle fork of the Cosumnes River, in northeast California, on June 13.
El Dorado sheriffs searched the river from the shore and a helicopter and dive teams were called in, but could not find Wescombe who was navigating the river with other experienced kayakers.
On the weekend a fisherman spotted an object floating in the river and alerted authorities.
A dive team retrieved the body and a coroner confirmed it was Wescombe.
El Dorado sheriffs said Wescombe was making his way down the river with the other kayakers when he rolled, but after righting himself the river funnelled him "into the next set of treacherous rapids".
The other kayakers watched as Wescombe entered the rapids, however did not see him exit.
Wescombe's body was found about 100 metres down river from where he was last seen.
