Australia plans to join the United States and Japan in researching a missile defence system to combat threats in Asia, says Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
Tokyo and Washington began work on the plan after North Korea lobbed a long-range missile over Japan's main island in 1998.
All three countries are expected to hold a meeting by December.
