A ban on alcohol advertising may be needed if Wales is to overcome the problem of excessive drinking, says Health Minister Lesley Griffiths.
News website WalesOnline.co.uk said Griffiths told a conference in Cardiff yesterday that the Welsh Government also wanted a minimum price per unit of alcohol.
"While the UK Government's recent proposal to ban sales below the cost of duty is a small step in the right direction, we believe it does not go far enough," she told the two-day Ash Wales and Alcohol Concern Cymru conference on alcohol and tobacco.
"We would like to see the introduction of a minimum price for alcohol and we also believe the advertising of alcohol should be much more restricted, with consideration given to a complete ban."
WalesOnline.co.uk said Griffiths' comments came as new figures showed that about 13,000 people a year in Wales were admitted to hospital with alcohol-related conditions, making up 1.5 per cent of all admissions.
