MADRID (AP) A Spanish official says about 100 sub-Saharan migrants have scaled fences into the Spain's northwest African enclave city of Melilla. Morocco's state news agency reported one died after falling.
Spanish Interior Ministry Melilla spokeswoman Irene Flores says 150 to 200 migrants stormed the fences before dawn Tuesday. Morocco's MAP news agency confirmed the death on the Moroccan side of the border, and said four migrants were injured and 40 arrested.
Melilla is surrounded by Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea. Migrants hoping to get to Europe camp on the Moroccan side, with several thousand trying each year to enter Melilla and Spain's other northwest African enclave city of Ceuta. Those intercepted in Spain are detained while authorities try to repatriate them.
