WASHINGTON (AP) Michelle Obama is highlighting a new topic: young people and gun violence.
A meeting with high-school students from a gang-riddled neighborhood in her Chicago hometown earlier this year led the first lady to start framing the debate in terms of what she says is the nation's obligation to help them reach their full potential.
Mrs. Obama's aides say she isn't making gun violence a new and distinct issue for herself. She is linking it to her work encouraging young people to focus on the power of education as a force for change.
She continues to call attention to the signature issues she adopted in her first term: reducing childhood obesity and rallying public support for military families.
