KEY POINTS:
MEXICO CITY - Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano rumbled to life with six eruptions Friday and Saturday, spewing steam and columns of ash more than 2km high.
There were reports of ash raining down on parts of Mexico state and in the capital 65km to the northwest, the National Disaster Prevention Centre said in a statement.
There appeared to be no injuries or damages and the eruptions were in line with the 5,450-metre volcano's normal activity, said Teofilo Hernandez, a researcher at the centre.
Authorities said people in the surrounding areas should clean ash from their cars and homes immediately and cover their mouths to avoid inhaling it.
Referred to affectionately as "Popo," the volcano has been erupting intermittently since December 1994.
