The fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was wounded during a failed operation to recapture him in northwestern Mexico, according to local authorities.
Guzman escaped in July from a maximum-security prison near Mexico City by crawling through a hole in his shower and has been on the run since.
Mexican marines believe they came close to recapturing him, with the help of United States agents who tracked his phone, at a ranch in the Sierra Madre mountains, closing in first by helicopter and then on foot when they came under fire.
In a statement on Saturday, the Government said: "Due to these actions and to avoid his arrest, the fugitive escaped in a hurry, which, according to the information that was collected, caused injuries to his leg and face."
It offered no further details about the injuries other than to say they were not the product of a direct clash.
