KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) Jamaican officials say one prisoner is dead and several officers have injuries after a melee broke out at a police station lockup.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force says one of the police officers is in serious condition at a hospital after a prisoner repeatedly hit him in the head with a seized baton.
Police in the central town of Mandeville say officers were starting to escort prisoners on foot from the station to a nearby court Wednesday when the prisoners "started to revolt" as they exited a holding pen.
Authorities say two officers were overwhelmed and the melee spread. Police have not said how many prisoners took part in the violence.
When it was over, one prisoner was reported dead. His identity is being withheld until his family can be contacted.
