US news network ABC reports that fired FBI official Andrew McCabe authorised a criminal probe of the Attorney-General.
It says that nearly a year before Attorney-General Jeff Sessions fired the senior FBI official, McCabe oversaw an investigation into Sessions' testimony before Congress about contacts with Russian operatives.
ABC describes the "previously-unreported decision" as "an exceptional move".
