Traffic chaos erupted and reached gridlock in two Paris suburbs after feuding mayors declared the same busy road one-way - but in opposite directions reports BBC.
The problem started when mayor of Levallois-Perret, Patrick Balkany made the D909 route one-way to reduce the amount of commuter traffic through his district says the BBC.
But Gilles Catoire, mayor of neighbouring Clichy-la-Garenne, complained that decision was made unilaterally and increased congestion in his suburb's area.
Catoire therefore made his section of the route one-way, but in the opposite direction.
Contradictory road-signs were put in place and traffic chaos ensued reports AFP news agency.
Traffic became gridlock and municipal and national police ended up having to be deployed to direct traffic away from the gridlock on the towns' borders and onto narrow suburban routes unsuited to high volumes of commuter traffic says AFP.
Thousands of motorists are said to pass between the two suburbs each day on their way into and out of the French capital.
