A snake hidden under a door mat has bitten a man at his home on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.
The man disturbed the snake when he lifted the mat outside his Flinders home around midday (2pm NZT) Sunday and was bitten on the foot.
The man's family treated the bite with a tourniquet while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
"The 42-year-old man told us he ... was bitten on the foot through his boot by what he thought was a tiger snake," paramedic Andrew Kick said.
He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
