Former South African president Nelson Mandela's condition remains "critical" but the Government hopes the 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero will be out of hospital soon, President Jacob Zuma said yesterday.
"We hope that very soon he will be out of hospital," Zuma said at a televised press conference with visiting US President Barack Obama. Mandela has been in hospital for three weeks for treatment for a recurring lung infection.
Zuma held talks with Obama last night New Zealand time. Afterwards, Obama was due to meet members of Mandela's family, the White House says. But officials confirmed the president will not see Mandela.
Obama's Air Force One landed in Pretoria yesterday at the start of a three-country tour of Africa.
