MELBOURNE - The family of a man who died after falling down a stairwell at the Melbourne Cricket Ground say they have been overwhelmed with messages of support following the tragic accident.
Daniel Russo, 27, fell about 4m down the stairwell in the Northern Stand, landing head first on the concrete below at about 5pm on Saturday at the end of the AFL match between Geelong and Hawthorn.
In a statement released today, Mr Russo's family said the death had "struck us all profoundly".
"Daniel was the much loved son/brother/partner/best mate to many and his charismatic nature inspired us all," the statement said.
"As a family, we are humbled by the outpouring of condolences and heartfelt messages. This can only be attributed to the way in which Daniel lived his life.
"For the short time that Daniel was with us, he touched so many, leaving a lasting impression and a smile that we all will never forget.
"In part this goes some way in giving us comfort to know so many people loved and cared deeply for Daniel as we as a family do."
Mr Russo was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition, but died there at about 6.30pm on Sunday.
