SYDNEY - A 38-year-old man will face Penrith Local Court today charged over the deaths of an elderly couple who were killed during an alleged illegal street race in Sydney's west.
Grandparents Alan Howle, 71, and Judith Howle, 70, were killed in a crash on the Great Western Highway at St Marys, in Sydney's west, about 6.20pm (AEST) on Sunday.
The couple were allegedly rammed by two Holden Commodores that police say may have been racing side by side moments before the impact.
The man, from Claremont Meadows in Sydney's west, has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and one count of negligent driving occasioning death.
He also faces a charge related to street racing, police said.
"Police will allege the (charged) man was the driver of a Commodore which was involved in a collision with a Toyota Camry at the intersection of Charles Hackett Drive and the Great Western Highway," a NSW Police spokesman said.
The man has been refused bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court today.
Charges were yet to be laid against a second male driver allegedly also involved in the incident, police said.
Police inquiries are continuing.
