Man appears on axe murder charge

A 37-year-old man was charged with murder, accused of hacking a pensioner to death with an axe in a busy London street.

Police found Joseph Sheehan, a waiter, standing over the body of 67-year-old Brian Messitt.

Police have not suggested a motive for the crime.

Detectives said they believed the two men knew each other but were not related.
