BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) Police in Malawi say they have arrested three people suspected of involvement in the shooting of a top finance official, who is being treated in a South African hospital.
Paul Mphwiyo, budget director in Malawi's finance ministry, was severely wounded on Friday in an attack that the government said was related to his anti-corruption efforts.
Police spokeswoman Rhoda Manjolo said Tuesday that authorities were questioning three suspects. Police say a "syndicate" was behind the attack.
President Joyce Banda has tried to stem official corruption and wasteful spending since coming to power last year following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika, the former president. As part of her government's austerity measures, she has taken a pay cut and sold a presidential jet that had been purchased by her predecessor.
