A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck Tonga.
The United States Geological Survey has reported the powerful tremor hit this afternoon at 5.38pm (NZT), 572km beneath the earth's surface and 340km off the west coast.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not signal a warning after the quake which was originally recorded at a magnitude of 6.5, but revised to 6.4.
