GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) Lightning strikes in the South American country of Guyana have killed a 17-year-old sugarcane worker and injured seven others.
The strikes have led the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation to review policies about staff working in fields during rain and thunderstorms.
Company Director Paul Bhim told The Associated Press Saturday that while he supports the review, it would be hard to predict where storms will strike and to get thousands of workers out of the field quickly.
Authorities say 17-year-old Klein Roberts was found dead in an open field just west of the capital of Georgetown on Thursday. They say seven other workers were injured at the same time but at a separate plantation. One worker is in critical condition and another is in serious condition.
