The United Nations war crimes court appeals chamber yesterday handed down an unprecedented life sentence on Bosnian Serb general Stanislav Galic for overseeing the 44-month bloody siege of Sarajevo. It said the 20-year-sentence imposed by a lower court in 2003 "was so unreasonable and plainly unjust in that it underestimated the gravity" of his crimes.
