MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) Liberian police officials say they have arrested an undisclosed number of anti-government protesters who planned a demonstration again President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf when she returned from an overseas trip.
Police Director Chris Massaquoi mentioned the arrests while appearing on a Wednesday morning radio program, saying the suspects had been caught driving around Monrovia the day before, falsely announcing that Sirleaf had resigned. He did not say how many were arrested, and police spokesman Sam Collins said the number was "not available to me."
For weeks, an anti-Sirleaf group known as the "Ellen Step Down Campaign" has been calling for Sirleaf's resignation on radio programs. The group planned to demonstrate at the airport Wednesday, but Massaquoi said the roads to the airport would be closed "because of national security implications."
