MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) The Liberian Senate has suspended a former warlord from his position as chairman of a legislative committee and has ordered an investigation into his conduct.
Prince Johnson is a former rebel leader whose forces captured and tortured then-President Samuel Doe in 1990. Doe later died in rebel custody.
Johnson is now a senator representing his native Nimba County and has led a legislative committee on defense and security.
Sen. Dan Morias, the acting head of Liberia's Senate, said Monday that Johnson was suspended so that a committee would investigate whether he had improperly advised the country's police director not to appear for questioning.
Morias said Johnson has been instructed not to speak to journalists about his suspension or else he will be expelled from the Senate.
