North Korean leader Kim Jong II was reportedly on his way to Beijing after studying China's capitalist reforms in Guangdong. Grainy TV footage from Shenzhen showed a man resembling Kim in a hotel lobby.
A convoy of cars left the hotel. Later a special train left the city station with its curtains drawn.
