Mr Bruning was taken to Perth Royal Hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later.
Since then his family have created a Facebook page to raise money to bring him back to New Zealand for a tangi and burial.
Mr Bruning's body will be released back to his family today. He will be taken to a Perth funeral director before being flown back to Chhristchurch and then on to Nelson where a tangi will be held.
Mr Bruning's friends posted tributes online.
Paula Stevenson said: "Gone way to soon. (It) was our privilege to be your mate, we're going to miss our Friday night drinks your primo breakfasts and your fine sense of humour.
"You would do anything for us the drop of a hat,. I can't believe you are gone."
Mr Bruning was described as having "the biggest smile and a great heart to go with it".
"Very genuine and humble bloke," said Richard Cserney.
"You will truly be missed by many and be remembered by us all."
Mr Bruning's family hope to raise $8000 to bring him home.
"Thank you to all that have made an indication that they have given a koha already, the Bruning and Mikaere whanau thank you from the bottom of our hearts and are eternally grateful for all your love and beautiful messages that have been received," said a family spokesman.
