Prime Minister John Key has congratulated new Solomon Islands Prime Minister Danny Philip on his election win and says he looks forward to continuing the relationship between the countries.
The Solomons and New Zealand have ties stretching from assistance programmes to the hosting here of seasonal workers.
"Our relationship is broad and deep, and has developed over many years of close association," Mr Key said. "It includes successful initiatives such as the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme, our development assistance programmes in key areas such as education, fisheries and transport, and our ongoing contribution to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (Ramsi)."
AAP reported today that Mr Philip intended to pursue a "look north" foreign policy.
He signalled foreign policy would remain with Taiwan over China, and said he had no intention of "kicking out Ramsi".
Mr Key also acknowledged the tenure of outgoing prime minister Derek Sikua.
