NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) A Kenyan court has acquitted a British man of robbery charges stemming from a 2008 attack on a police post that allowed him to escape from police custody.
Magistrate Kiarie Waweru Kiarie said Friday the prosecution had failed to prove Jermaine Grant who also faces terror charges had been involved in an assault on a police post near the eastern town of Garissa.
Grant managed to flee during that attack, after being arrested by police who said he was on his way to Somalia to join the rebel group al-Shabab. He was re-arrested in 2011 in the coastal town of Mombasa and is now serving a three-year jail term for immigration offenses and lying to a government official.
Police say he is part of a cell that planned to attack Kenya in late 2011.
