Katrina hits Thai tsunami system plans

Thailand's plan to set up a tsunami warning system has been hit by Hurricane Katrina, as the firm building its buoys is based in New Orleans.

The US pledged to provide training to Thailand for the Indian Ocean system if it bought three buoys.

The equipment, with an initially planned installation by mid-2006, would help detect a tsunami headed for Thailand and neighbouring countries.
