LONDON - July was the hottest month in Britain since records began nearly a century ago, according to provisional figures from the Meteorological Office.
The average temperature was 17.7 degrees centigrade, beating the previous record of 17.3 degrees set in July 1983 and equalled in August 1995.
Official figures will be compiled after the month ends at midnight and are due to be released in the coming days.
The Meteorological Office started keeping such records in 1914.
