Japan's Princess Sayako was formally engaged to her fiance in a traditional betrothal rite as the two families exchanged ritual gifts including bream and sake.
Sayako, 35, the emperor's only daughter, waited alongside her parents at the imperial palace for a messenger to bring a formal proposal of marriage from Yoshiki Kuroda, a 39-year-old city hall employee.
