KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) A policeman has been fatally shot and his common-law wife is fighting for her life after gunmen invaded their home in northern Jamaica.
Police on Thursday identified the slain special constable as Jermaine Bartley. Attackers shot him and his partner in the head late Wednesday. Bartley died instantly and the woman is hospitalized in critical condition.
Commissioner Owen Ellington says he is appalled by the incident and is promising to capture the gunmen.
Authorities did not disclose a possible motive for the attack. But a Thursday police statement says brazen criminals target officers on and off the job.
Bartley was murdered at his home in the northern town of Granville, a hot spot for Jamaica's lucrative lottery scam rings.
