KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) Kenneth Hoo Kim, a Jamaican record producer who helped operate a well-known reggae music studio, has died. He was 66.
Hoo Kim's wife, Selma, said Friday that he died from lung cancer at a hospital in Jamaica.
Hoo Kim was one of four brothers who ran the famed Channel One studio, which opened in 1972. It was located in a gritty area in Kingston and produced hits including "I Need a Roof" by the Mighty Diamonds, "Ballistic Affair" by Leroy Smart and "War" by Wailing Souls.
The studio helped launch the career of drummer Sly Dunbar, a member of the Channel One house band, The Revolutionaries.
The studio stopped recording in the early 1980s because of gang violence in the community.
