KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) Police in Jamaica have seized a record number of firearms on an island that has one of the highest murder rates in the Western hemisphere.
Authorities said late Friday that they collected 77 illegal weapons last month, the highest ever in any given month since June 2010.
The seizures come amid an ongoing operation that also resulted in the arrest of 174 suspects in October. So far, more than 600 weapons have been seized this year.
The island of 2.7 million people has reported more than 1,000 killings every year since 2004.
