KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) Authorities in Jamaica are investigating the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old youth to determine if police were involved in his death.
Assistant Police Commissioner Warren Clarke says the death of Ashanine Clarke has sparked protests in the island's northwest region. He says residents are complaining that officers acted unprofessionally and used excessive force against the youth.
Clarke said late Tuesday that he is seeking witnesses to the Nov. 14 killing as part of the investigation.
Jamaica police have long faced allegations of abuse and excessive force.
An independent commission is currently investigating roughly 1,600 cases of alleged abuses, with more than 60 percent of those cases involving allegations of fatal shootings, assault and shooting injuries.
