WASHINGTON (AP) The National Archives in Washington is displaying a trove of Jewish books and documents recovered from Baghdad 10 years ago.
This autumn marks the first time the historic religious items will be publicly displayed.
They were found 10 years ago in the flooded basement of the Iraqi intelligence building by American troops searching for weapons of mass destruction. The tattered Torah scroll fragments and other books were shipped to the United States for years of conservation work.
The collection offers a rare glimpse into the Iraqi Jewish culture. But the decision to return the items to Iraq after its display here has angered Iraqi Jews in the United States, who say the country effectively looted the materials and should not have the right to now reclaim them.
