Albrecht Graf Goertz, car designer. Died aged 92
Albrecht Graf Goertz, designer of the BMW 507 roadster, has died aged 92. The two-seater sports car went into production in the early 1950s, based on the chassis of the BMW 502 3.2-litre saloon car. It received rave reviews at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955, as did a Goertz-designed BMW 503. Born in Germany, Goertz moved to the United States in 1936. His first car, in 1939, was a two-door coupe with curvy bodywork, based on a Ford Mercury chassis. He moved to BMW after World War II, with the help of car importer Max Hoffman. Goertz also helped develop a wide range of consumer objects, including fountain pens, cameras, musical instruments, furniture and textiles.
