KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - NSW Premier Morris Iemma has called a special commission of inquiry into the beleaguered Sydney Ferries corporation.
Four people were killed last week when a Sydney ferry collided with another vessel on Sydney Harbour. That followed another fatal mishaps earlier this year and a string of other incidents involving the government-owned ferry corporation over the past two years.
Mr Iemma said today lawyer Bret Walker SC, who headed the inquiry into Campbelltown and Camden hospitals, would conduct an inquiry into Sydney Ferries.
"Recent incidents involving Sydney Ferries have made it clear to me that it's time to put the spotlight onto the entire operations of the Sydney Ferries Corporation from top to bottom," Mr Iemma said in a statement.
"This will be a thorough, rigorous and independent inquiry and I want no stone left unturned at the end of the process."
The inquiry will look into the provision of ferry services and any action which should be taken to improve the ability of the corporation to provide safe, efficient and customer-focused ferry services.
