Indonesia prepared to send in the troops to fight brush fires that have sent a gray haze over Malaysia and Singapore.
Wildlife reserves have been shrouded in black smog and thousands of children have been kept out of schools.
"We will deploy troops to ... fight the fires," Indonesia's military chief Djoko Suyanto said.
They faced a monumental task, with hundreds of hotspots covering a vast area, mostly on Borneo and Sumatra.
