India is readying an Army division for possible dispatch to Iraq as a peacekeeping force following repeated United States requests for such a contingent.
Official sources said India wants its contingent to operate exclusively in a "peacekeeping and not peace enforcing" force, and to function under its own command, reporting only to the United Nations special envoy for Iraq and not to American or British commanders.
