HYDERABAD, India (AP) Electricity workers in southeastern India have temporarily called off their strike ahead of a massive cyclone that is expected to hit the region, ending widespread power blackouts for millions of people.
Nearly 30,000 workers shut down power plants across Andhra Pradesh state for five days to protest the Indian government's decision to divide the state into two.
Sai Baba, the workers' leader, said Friday that they were temporarily calling off the strike because Cyclone Phailin was forecast to hit the region Saturday evening.
Separately, more than 600,000 state government employees opposed to the division of the state continued their nearly month-long strike, saying it will divide Telugu-speaking people, lead to cuts in the state budget and create problems with water resources.
