PATNA, India (AP) Police say suspected Maoist rebels boarded a passenger train and shot and killed three police guards while it was passing through their stronghold in eastern India.
Police officer P.N. Rai says the insurgents also stabbed two other guards on Saturday and fled with their arms and ammunition after stopping the train by pulling the emergency chain.
The insurgents did not harm any passengers in the attack near Jamalpur, a town 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of Patna, the capital of Bihar state.
In June, they had killed one security guard and two passengers by firing at a train in the state.
Rebels have been fighting in several Indian states for more than 40 years. They demand land and jobs for impoverished tribal communities they say are ignored by the government.
