Sure, I want to be able to look my grandkids in the eye.
But I know that if I espouse that brave and controversial position, I will immediately face a primary challenge from the right.
I certainly don't favour lockstep allegiance to a creepy demagogue who appeals to the worst parts of our nature - is something I'd love to say, if I weren't afraid that saying it would put a huge target on my back.
Of course, I'd like nothing better than to be able to stand with Jeff Flake, and Bob Corker, and John McCain, and even former President George W. Bush, (If George W. Bush Has Correctly Concluded That He Looks Good by Comparison, Then . . . God Help Us) to say that re-election is not worth sacrificing our fundamental American values.
