BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) Hungarian prosecutors say that a lawmaker who claimed his partner had injured herself after tripping over their large dog has confessed to punching her in the face, grabbing her hair and slamming her head against wooden terrace railings.
Prosecutors said Monday that Jozsef Balogh was drunk on April 28 when he assaulted his partner, who suffered a broken nose, multiple cheekbone fractures and other injuries.
Balogh had initially said the woman had tripped over the family's nearly blind Komondor, a large Hungarian dog traditionally used to guard livestock.
Balogh resigned from the governing Fidesz party's parliamentary faction in May after party officials indicated his behavior was unacceptable. He has been an independent lawmaker since then.
Parliament suspended his immunity from prosecution in September.
