PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) A proposal to increase Haiti's minimum wage by 13 percent has drawn hundreds of protesters in the impoverished Caribbean nation's capital who say they want more.
Garment workers at an industrial park in Port-au-Prince say that the recommendation to raise minimum wage from $4.54 to $5.11 per eight-hour work day is insufficient.
Carrying tree branches as a symbol of grassroots solidarity on Wednesday, they said they want twice that amount.
The government-created Higher Council for Wages approved a recommendation for the wage increase last month for garment workers. The raise is due to take effect Jan. 1 pending approval from the ministry of social affairs.
