Human remains found in Brisbane, likely there more than 10 years, police say

Human remains discovered at a property in Brisbane's north have likely been there for more than 10 years, police say.

The remains were discovered about 11am today local time in a "plumbing pit" at the back of a property used by Autism Queensland on North Road at Brighton.

The disused pit was behind a detached Queenslander-style house at the back of the property which is being used as an administration building.

Acting Detective Superintendent Mick O'Dowd said initial investigations suggested the person was male, but they don't know more than that at this stage.

O'Dowd told reporters an investigation would occur at the crime scene this week "until a proper examination can be made of that water tank in the ground".

"There are some suspicious aspects to the deceased at this stage, and we have to conduct further inquiries in relation to that, bearing in mind the time delay," he said at the property.

Police couldn't say exactly how long the remains had been there, but conceded it appeared to be more than 10 years.

O'Dowd said they were calling on anyone with information about missing persons either recent or historical in the Brighton area to come forward.
