The Sri Lankan military shelled a hospital and a village inside a government-declared "safe zone" for displaced families, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest attack on civilians in two years, health officials said.
Yesterday's assault underscored the rising concern for the hundreds of thousands of refugees reportedly trapped in the conflict zone as the military closes in on the Tamil rebels' last stronghold in the northeast.
Officials said at least 67 civilians have been killed in shelling since Tuesday.
