A dog owner strangled his collie with a lead before cutting her body up with an axe, cooking her with an OXO cube and feeding the remains to his other pets.

Dominic O'Connor's vile act, against four-year-old collie Jess, was revealed after a friend visited his home in Northern Ireland and noticed a foul smell.

Police were called to the property and found dog hairs and liquid in the fire grate, where O'Connor had tried to burn the rest of Jess' carcass.

He admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dog at Downpatrick Crown Court, the MailOnline reported.

During the two-day trial, the court heard how O'Connor told his arresting officers: "I cooked it and fed it to the other dog with a few onions and an Oxo cube and salt and pepper."

O'Connor claimed he tried to strangle Jess twice, but the lead he had used had "too much give".

After he killed his dog, he chopped up her body with an axe and bread knife before burning them in a fire, reports the Metro.

He then threw the rest of the remains in water at Portavogie Harbour, County Down.

The friend who raised the alarm about Jess' disappearance told the court O'Connor confessed killing the dog to her.

She told the court: "In a way he was joyful about it. He was not all there. His head was somewhere else."

O'Connor will be sentenced on November 21.
