KEY POINTS:
A Hong Kong man scaled 24 floors to stab an ex-girlfriend repeatedly as she slept before abseiling down to make a pre-dawn escape.
The woman was stabbed seven or eight times, mainly in the neck, said the South China Morning Post.
The woman's mother, who was also in the flat, heard a scream and told police "she found a man attacking her daughter". When the attacker saw the mother, he clambered out of the living-room window.
"We believe the man abseiled down to the 17th floor with a climbing rope and then climbed down the drainpipes to ground level to escape," said a police spokesperson. A rope was found hanging outside the flat with a bag containing white powder.
The woman was in critical condition in hospital.
The newspaper said it was understood the victim and her former boyfriend broke up early this year.
Police are treating the case as attempted murder.
