SYDNEY - The father of one of the sailors killed in the fire aboard HMAS Westralia in 1998 has called the Defence Department's handling of the tragedy a disgrace.
Four crew members were killed when a fire, caused by faulty fuel lines, erupted in the engine room of HMAS Westralia off Fremantle in May 1998.
The Defence Department has admitted that an official report, written three months before the fire by military and police investigators, specifically warned about the risks from "sub-standard and non-genuine parts" on the ship, News Limited newspapers reported today.
Vic Meek, father of sailor Bradley Meek, is calling for a full investigation into the incident and those responsible to be brought to justice.
"I would like the biggest inquiry into this, the whole set-up," Mr Meek told ABC Radio.
"A royal commission, the coroner's inquest re-opened, anything at all that would finally come to some finalisation of it and someone being charged.
"No one's been charged over this whole episode.
"It's just a disgrace the way this whole thing's been run over the years."
