International hacker group Anonymous has released a video targeting billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk over his recent cryptocurrency comments, saying they are tired of his "temper tantrums".
In a chilling video, the group warned Mr Musk to "expect us" and said the games played by the entrepreneur had destroyed lives.
The hackers said the "carefully curated" image of Elon Musk would be exposed and people were "beginning to see [him] as nothing more than another narcissistic rich dude who is desperate for attention".
"There are plenty of other companies working on space exploration and electric vehicles, you are just the only CEO who has gained a cult following through sh*tposting and trolling the world on social media," the group said.
The video was posted as the Tesla CEO published a mysterious tweet on Friday with the hashtag #Bitcoin alongside a broken heart emoji, which seemed to indicate he was breaking up with the cryptocurrency. It follows his recent announcement that Tesla would stop accepting Bitcoin for vehicle purchases, due to environmental concerns.
The tweet sparked a wave of animosity towards Musk at the Bitcoin 2021 conference on Friday, with Max Keiser, host of the "Keiser Report", repeating, " F88k Elon!" several times.
A number of conference attendees posted on social media to share their disappointment in Musk.
It comes as Bitcoin suffered through its worst month in a decade, continuing to plunge 7 per cent during trading yesterday.
Anonymous, the group responsible for some of the biggest online scams in history, also took aim at Musk's "superiority complex" in the footage posted to YouTube, citing the time he dubbed himself the "Emperor of Mars".
They also claim he doesn't understand the struggles of most people.
"Millions of retail investors were really counting on their crypto gains to improve their lives," Anonymous said. "This is something that you will never understand because you were born into the stolen wealth of a South African apartheid emerald mine and have no clue what struggle is like for most of the working people in the world.
"Of course, they took the risk upon themselves when they invested, and everyone knows to be prepared for volatility in crypto, but your tweets this week show a clear disregard for the average working person," Anonymous continued.
"As hardworking people have their dreams liquidated over your public temper tantrums, you continue to mock them with memes from one of your million dollar mansions."
Musk used to be a major promoter of cryptocurrencies however he has changed his tune recently, due to concerns about its energy usage.
Bitcoin mining is done by solving mathematical puzzles on powerful computers that require large amounts of energy.
However, Anonymous claims that Musk fails to practise what he preaches within his Tesla company.
"For the past several years you have enjoyed one of the most favourable reputations of anyone in the billionaire class because you have tapped into the desire that many of us have to life in a world with electric cars and space exploration, but recently your carefully created public image is being exposed and people are beginning to see you as nothing more than another narcissistic rich dude who is desperate for attention."
