TRIPOLI, Egypt (AP) A hospital official in the Libyan city of Benghazi says unknown gunmen have shot dead a policeman.
Al-Galaa hospital spokeswoman Fadia al-Barghathi said Nagi Hussein Hamad was brought to the hospital Monday with seven bullets in the head. She said he had finished his shift when the gunmen followed him and shot him dead.
It is not clear who the attackers are. There has been a spike in such targeted killings in Libya, particularly in restive Benghazi, since the ouster of dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. An American teacher was killed there last week.
Benghazi, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising, is a stronghold of militias with roots in anti-Gadhafi rebels.
Authorities blame the killings on militias resisting state authority and Islamists seeking revenge on Gadhafi-era officials.
